Bed and Breakfasts are not a new phenomenon. They have been around for a while and because of this the industry has matured. They are forced to compete with other types of lodging so now you can get more for less. The typical Bed and Breakfast offers free coffee/tea/snacks, free wifi, free large breakfast and more, whereas most of these are add-ons in the typical hotel. But how can we do even better? Bed and Breakfasts are seasonal. They almost always have a high and low season. Plan your trip to take advantage of this. Even a B&B that survives on skiing will have a part of the ski season that they consider low season. Our B&B is very close to a ski area, about18 minutes away, and winter is our slow season. We discount 40% off of summer rates. If you can be flexible on your dates, you win.
The biggest way to get a better price is mid week. Bed and Breakfasts are getaway locations. They are located where you want to go for a day or two and then return home. This is ideal for the weekend. So the obvious thing is to not go on the weekend. Mid week rental is much harder for them to come by so they offer a lower rate. And usually it is significant. I know this is a bigger hassle for you but we discount 25% off the room price for mid week rental. Again, that flexibility comes into play.
The other big thing today is the group coupon sites. Lots of Bed and Breakfasts are jumping on the band wagon to fill the rooms. Be careful as they are well aware of the above and frequently will try and restrict you to the above dates like mid week and off season. If you are not flexible, then this could lead to a purchase that is going to cost you money in the long run if you can’t use it.
Bed and Breakfasts are small operations, you can always ask. Are you going to stay for several days? That has value for you and the B&B owner so you can ask for a price break. Are you bringing a large group? Again that is worth something so let’s see what we can do. As a B&B owner, I can tell you, we do not want empty rooms. Once the day has passed, we can never get that lost revenue back. Booking at the last minute? Yep, I can give you a deal.
